Tripadvisor performs checks on full day tour with Mr Eng allowed us to visit the Orang Utan Island and highlights of Georgetown that we selected. We have seen Orang Utan in Borneo, but were unaware that there was any in Penang, until reading about the work of the Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Island is a 3 hour return trip from Georgetown and was one of the most fabulous experiences we have had. You are able to observe these amazing animals up close and interact with them including the dominant male - BJ and dominant female Baboon plus their offspring. The care of these beautiful animals is down to the staff and volunteers at Orang Utan Island and their passion, dedication and knowledge is outstanding. The Island needs your support as they survive on donations. Please go and visit them and support their vital second part of the tour was visiting places in Penang that we had selected with Mr Eng's help street art, Clan jetty, Clan-house, a Nyona Baba house, and George Town's World Unesco Heritage area. Mr Eng is an informative and happy guide who is keen to share his knowledge of Penang. We won't forget our Chinese character lessons nor the significance of the tiger! We very much appreciated him fitting in with our choices of destinations and enjoyed his company. The second part of the tour could be challenging for older visitors as it is quite fast paced and Mr Eng is an energetic guide, but don't let that put you off - just go! Danny was an absolutely incredible guide, telling us the fascinating history of George Town while taking us through the city. And the food . . . I'm still dreaming about so much of the food. Petite île située sur la côte ouest de la Malaisie, Penang est la partie insulaire de l’État homonyme, au nord de la péninsule malaise. L’île se trouve séparée du continent asiatique par deux ponts enjambant le Détroit de Penang. Peu connue des voyageurs qui se rendent en Asie, Penang vit dans l’ombre de Bangkok, des îles du golfe de Thaïlande, de Singapour ou de Kuala Lumpur. Pourtant, l’île se fait de plus en plus connaître et a bien des charmes à offrir à ses hôtes elle ne manque pas d’activités à faire. Visiter Penang est incontournable pour quiconque se rend en Malaisie. Peuplée par 750 000 personnes, la densité y est plutôt élevée et l’urbanisme se concentre sur la côte orientale de l’île. Vous ne savez que faire à Penang ? Nous vous avons dressé une liste des choses immanquables à faire et à voir en allant visiter Penang. 1. Le centre historique de George Town Selon certains, la ville de George Town manque d’intérêt. Pourtant, le patrimoine historique qu’elle renferme vaut le détour. Le centre historique, avec ses monuments, est inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Patrimoine historique et culturel, mais aussi culinaire on surnomme Penang la capitale gastronomique de la Malaisie. Les bâtisses de la vieille ville offrent un mélange singulier d’architecture coloniale et de style chinois. C’est également un quartier très vivant à faire pour visiter Penang. 2. Les graffitis de George Town Le centre-ville de George Town est un quartier très artistique et très célèbre pour son art de rue et ses graffitis, faisant de Penang une ville-galerie » à ciel ouvert. La municipalité a fait appel à des artistes locaux pour orner ses murs. Résultat, d’innombrables œuvres et fresques peuvent être contemplées au hasard des rues, à même les façades de quoi se délecter en admirant les murs et faire une chasse aux graffitis à chaque ruelle ! 3. Gurney Drive Située sur le front de mer à Penang City, Gurney Drive est une promenade très populaire et très fréquentée des locaux. L’avenue est également le second centre d’affaires de George Town, là où ont poussé de hauts buildings à-même la plage. On y trouve de nombreux commerces et restaurants de rue où manger des plats locaux pour pas cher, ainsi que de nombreux hôtels où se loger. 4. Sun Yat-Sen Museum Le musée Sun Yat-sen Penang, situé dans la vieille ville de George Town, est dédié à Sun Yat-Sen 1866-1925, le célèbre révolutionnaire Chinois ayant fondé la République de Chine en 1912, considéré comme le père fondateur de la Chine moderne ». L’homme y séjourna lui-même et c’est la maison où il élabora de nombreuses stratégies pour faire chuter la dynastie Qing, à partir de 1910. 5. Le manoir de Cheong Fatt Tze Situé sur la rue Leith à George Town, le manoir de Cheong Fatt Tze est emblématique de la ville et incontournable pour quiconque vient visiter Penang ses couleurs bleu indigo ne laisseront personne indifférent, on l’appelle parfois le manoir bleu ». Inscrit au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, il est aujourd’hui un hôtel de luxe où se loger à Penang. On peut le visiter sans y séjourner, en payant une visite guidée. Un lieu chargé d’histoire qui fut par ailleurs le lieu de tournage de nombreux films, à l’instar du long métrage Indochine. Réservez votre chambre au manoir de Cheong Fatt Tze 6. Le Wat Chaiyamangkalaram Temple bouddhiste célèbre situé à George Town, non loin de la Gurney Drive, le wat Chaiyamangkalaram abrite l’une des plus longues statues du Bouddha couché au monde ainsi que de nombreuses statues de créatures mythiques. L’édifice fut construit en 1845 sur une parcelle accordée par la reine Victoria à une communauté Siamoise. La statue de Bouddha mesure 33 mètres de long, ce qui en fait la troisième plus longue du monde. 7. La Tour de l’Horloge de la Reine Victoria La Tour de l’Horloge – également appelée Jubilee Clock Tower – fut construite en l’honneur de la reine Victoria en 1897, pour célébrer le Jubilé du diamant, au 60ème anniversaire de son règne 1837-1901. C’est une tour de style mauresque située au croisement de Light Street et de Beach Street, inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO depuis 2008. 8. Les Jardins Botaniques de Penang Crédit photo Flickr – John Abel Penang dispose de nombreux poumons de verdure dont notamment des jardins botaniques. On les appelle également les jardins des cascades , et sont situés sur Jalan Air Terjun, à l’ouest de George Town. Sillonnez dans une jungle équatoriale dans les sentiers et les escaliers pour arriver au au jardin botanique, fondé en 1884, où contempler de nombreuses espèces végétales et où humer leurs senteurs multiples. 9. Le temple Kek Lok Si Situé à flanc de colline sur la route menant vers le plan d’eau d’Ayer Itam au sud-ouest de George Town, le temple Kek Lok Si est à voir si vous ne savez que faire à Penang. Connu des locaux comme le temple du bonheur suprême », l’édifice est considéré comme le plus grand temple bouddhiste d’Asie du Sud-Est. Les moines taoïstes en font un lieu privilégié de retraite et de méditation. Dressée sur sept étages, la pagode offre une vue imprenable sur Penang en s’élevant jusqu’à son pinacle. Construit entre 1890 et 1905, le meilleur moment pour visiter le temple est le Nouvel an chinois. 10. Penang National Park Que faire à Penang quand on a vu tous les temples ? Partir pour le parc national de Penang, à l’ouest de l’île, peut être une idée. Le parc s’étend sur 1 213 hectares entre mer et terre, et recèle de nombreuses espèces végétales et animales. La zones est une réserve naturelle protégée où de nombreuses recherches géologiques, archéologiques, historiques et ethnologiques sont pratiquées. En outre, la plage de Monkey Beach donnera l’occasion de se baigner après la randonnée. 11. Monter à Penang Hill La colline de Penang est une station de montagne située à 6 kilomètres à l’ouest de George Town, dans le centre de l’île. Que faire à Penang quand on aime la nature ? Prenez de la hauteur par un funiculaire du même nom Penang Hill, pour grimper à 900 mètres d’altitude et profiter d’une superbe vue sur la ville et la jungle tropicale. Pour se rendre à Penang, il existe plusieurs options selon votre point de départ. Nous vous avons listé quelques exemples de cas typiques L’avion L’aéroport international de Penang se trouve au sud-est de l’île, à Bayan Lepas 14 kilomètres de George Town.
